The Owl 04:42
Moon after moon I perch here and stare Stare at your wings The hooing that you sing And as you soar by Night after night The fog floats through by your wings As you sail through the night And I'de hide in the leaves But now I stand out Away from the leaves Hoping that you see And as you soar by I open up my wings I close my eyes and sing Sing to you in the light When the nighttime goes and the morning comes And your asleep somewhere and I'm still up And when the morning goes and the daytime comes I will have gathered prey for you when the nighttime comes But the prey is running few I still leave them all for you But my bellies growing hungry And you fly around head peering down I want your eyes You look away I need them so Just for a glance You look away Stern shadowed brow And as you go I hear you sing For someone else For someone else For someone else I hear you sing For someone else For someone else I hear you sing For someone else For someone else

The Buffalo 05:44
I'm I'm leaving I'm leaving no I'm leaving no trace I'm I'm on I'm on my, I'm on my way I've Wandered, I've wondered for weeks Exploring the peaks, the falls are too many Just like the enemy that slaughters our young They dress as our own, they climb and they creep From the peaks we've explored They weren't there before We gaze and we drink as the trout pass our sip We're heading far west extending the trip Our biggest and best have forgotten the week No No place No place is No place is safe No No place No place that I No place I can stay More running each day Our pack has run few We run for the sun , through the heat and the dew Today there are three, tomorrow it's two I'm the last one chasing the sun I'm the last one chasing the sun No No place No place is No place is safe No No place No place that I No place I can stay I'm I'm leaving I'm leaving no I'm leaving no trace I'm I'm on I'm on my I'm on my way No place is safe, no place I can stay I'm leaving no trace, I'm on my way Today there are three, tomorrow it's two I'm the last one, chasing the sun No No place No place is safe No place I can stay I'm I'm leaving I'm leaving no trace I'm on my way

The Chase 05:02
Death stares at me Peers from the pines Birds silence beaks Deer run from the creek Im in a clear Under the sun Nowhere to go Nowhere to run Take a deep breath Dig my hooves in the dirt Now I can see Death stares at me She lays in the grass She lays fast and proud I feel so slow And she pounces out She runs like the wind Four steps at a time She is closing in And I look down I have not took a step I'm moving slow I have to go Before I die, Before I die I have to go before I die My first step was quick I'm faster than I think Here comes the creek I leap through with two leaps And she jumped over the whole thing Her hungers strong and my will is weak My will is weak, my will is weak Her hungers strong and my will is weak And I see a fox hiding in a hole And i see the owl soaring in the breeze And why wont the bear come out of his cave And I see my faun staring down at me And I'm on my own nowhere to run There goes the moon, here comes the sun Then I reached the cliff, that over looks the lake I can either jump, or turn around and wait I will wait I will turn around, I will turn around and wait And she was only steps behind My plans to move but do I have time She was in the air And I could smell her breath I moved aside she fell to her death

The Rabbit 04:41
You run from the hungry bear With it's grizzly growl, it's deadly stare You run from the rabid dog With it's bloody teeth, it's matted hair You run and run and run and run All your life, every day But now, they know, your hiding place It's time to stand, time to play And no, forget your fears Forget your fears, of yesterday First you saw the hungry bear She took an eye, and some hair Then you saw the rabid dog, she took a leg Choked on the bone and ran away And as you stand here crippled now Your heart is strong, your futures clear And now, I'm the alpha male It's my forest now, if you couldn't tell And you monsters, you should be afraid Of the rabbit with one leg, and the cotton tail Cause I will terrorize your lives I will come and steal your food, and keep you up at night I will come and take your babes Take them to my rabbit hole And I'll make them slaves I'll make them dig for days Make them dig for days
5.
The Deer 04:28
Oh my doe my deer I saw you being chased by the lion The lion in the clear I froze, I froze and watched you run I watched you disappear In the woods behind the sun I wonder where you've gone I wonder where you've been I wonder if it's love I wonder if it's sin I would follow you if I could If the tables turned I know you would Your far from home You must be tired Are you alone Out with the wild Come back to me I need you so My legs are skinny But my hooves are sharp The slightest noise will scare me And I'll run away because I'm smart And you won't catch me, cause I run too fast I'll hide behind some granite And you'll run right past Let's stop to eat some grass And smell the lavender plants I'm far from home I'm getting tired I'm all alone Out with the wild Come back to me I need you so Come back to me I need you so Come back to me I need you so Come back to me I need you so

The Fox 05:01
The moss is damp with the morning dew I fell asleep to coyote's howl The grass is trampled and the poppies few I still hear the heart broken owl Theres something different with the morning air Differents bad and it's always strange If you were here I know that we would share I count on you to understand my pain I still don't know the reasons why I blame myself for being weak I feel like you didn't even try Come back to me so that we can speak Stay low so they wont find you Breathe slow they're right behind you Don't grow the sun can't shine through Let's not come this way again Stay low so they wont find you Breathe slow they're right behind you Don't grow the sun can't shine through Let's not come this way again A week has passed now and as I wake I stretch my paws and my stomach roars My leg is tattered I can feel the breaks I need your help I'm on the floor It broke your heart when rabbit took our pups The snow is coming I'll need to go If I don't then I'll be stuck And I fear you'll be on your own I hear the howls echo off the rocks Cover my ears and I close my eyes In the morning I will start to walk I will find you, I hope your alive Stay low so they wont find you Breathe slow they're right behind you Don't grow the sun can't shine through Let's not come this way again Stay low so they wont find you Breathe slow they're right behind you Don't grow the sun can't shine through Let's not come this way again A month has passed and the snow has come My bodies cold and the valleys dim I lay here with our only son He's grown so much since you've seen him He brought me food and he fixed my leg Every night we sing to the moon He said he found you and your ok And that you will be here soon In the morning you were standing there With our daughter's paw on your paw You said you loved me in the morning air That's the story I leave on the wall Stay low so they wont find you Breathe slow they're right behind you Don't grow the sun can't shine through Let's not come this way again Stay low so they wont find you Breathe slow they're right behind you Don't grow the sun can't shine through Let's not come this way again

The Bear 05:15
Woke up from my sleep The flowers in bloom Walked east to the creek I'll be home soon Stopped in the meadow To visit the deer But the meadow was concrete And the deer wasn't there Alone I am, alone I feel Alone in this meadow In the air standing still And as I looked around at all of the trees I noticed the bee hives were missing their bees I noticed the sounds of leaves falling was gone What is wrong, I'm standing alone And I can not hear the falling leaves song With my heart beating quick I heard coyote's howl So I ran for the oak tree To talk to the owl But the oak tree was missing Owls nowhere to be seen I guess I'll go ask the salmon That swim up the stream Alone I am, alone I feel Alone by this oak tree In the air standing still And when I got there the rivered run dry I noticed the skyline was missing the sky I noticed the sounds of frogs croaking was gone What is wrong, I'm standing alone And I can not hear the waterfalls song And this can't be right This has to be wrong, this is wrong, this is wrong And I can't go on So I sat on a stump, on a stump, on a stump And there I just sat Till the sun went down and the sky turned to black And there I just sat Till the sun came up again, nothings changed Surrounded by feathers And pieces of eggs I shouldn't have slept for so long Maybe I could have done something for some of my friends But where have they gone They've gone somewhere else They had to save themselves Who took them from me Who took my home And why am I, why am I, why am I all alone Alone, alone, alone, alone Alone, alone, alone, alone And I don't think I can go on this way I don't think this is the place I should stay I dont think I'll hear my cubs sing their song What is wrong I'm walking alone And I don't think, that I'm, that I'm That I'm coming home

The Flood 04:41
The air wasn't wet The river was low And theres one salmon swimming alone The leaves from the trees Won't pad our knees As we're digging for food in the ground The grass was all dry from the sun in the sky And there's not one cloud overhead I went to the chief In search of relief He said we must dance all night long So under the moon in the middle of June We danced and we sang our proud song We danced for five days singing our praise That quickley turned to cursing the sun In our song And we danced And we danced and We just kept on dancing Rain started to fall We sung our songs louder And stomped our feet harder It started to pour And rain covered the floor And the river got high, the river got high The river, the river, the river got high And it poured over the sides And the smoke from the sweat house turned white And the children cried And the squaw took them up on her side And she ran for the ground that was high And she said coyote please Only take me Leave the trees and their seeds My life has been long They sang the wrong song And she danced And she danced And looked up to the sky And looked the storm in it's eye And a wave came up high A wave came up high The wave, the wave, the wave came too high

about

After RC Essig put his former band, El Olio Wolof to sleep, RC started writing songs as Awahnichi. Being a Yosemite Valley Miwok Indian, RC wanted to put together an album filled with stories based on different characters from Yosemite Valley.

RC played solo as Awahnichi later adding Vanessa Hofmann to play the parts he had in his head for accompaniment. Lacking the rhythm that RC felt was needed, versatile drummer Dante Johnson joined the group to flush out the sound. The three piece took to the studio allowing the overlapping characters and the dark tones of Awahnihci to be put into a recording.

When it came to recording there was only one place RC had in mind, S.D.R.L. in San Diego, CA. Being a fan of the dark side of music that has come out of San Diego he felt that recording at S.D.R.L., started by Pall Jenkins (The Black Heart Procession), and Brad Lee (Album Leaf) was a no brainer.

Awahnichi spent five days in the studio at S.D.R.L.

When it came to mastering RC turned to long time friend Rafter Roberts (Rafter).
